I'm not sure that accuracy of reporting when the decision was reached is foolproof. Even if when the conscious awareness of the decision to push the button is accurately mapped in time, why would there not be a time lag between neural activity and conscious awareness? Why must awareness precede or coincide with neural activity? There could simply be lag in the system.
I agree that this experiment doesn't really account for lag in a conscious decision-making system. Although I wonder how long that lag would be.... In any case, I think people intuitively think about the process of "conscious decisions" as one that begins with a conscious thought, but maybe that's an assumption we should be challenging?
